ON1

House and its integration into the landscape

In this assignment, we explored how basic principles of architecture and landscape architecture can be applied to designing a small house and its site in the South Holland landscape. We examined the form of the building, its location, and the characteristics of the house and its surroundings. This was one of the first projects I completed, and while it is not my best work, it shows how much I have grown.

My approach

In our project, we had to design a building for a forest ranger. The forest ranger needed a space in his home to accommodate a group of 30 visitors. I designed a house where the ground floor is dedicated to visitors, and the top two floors are for the forest ranger. The top floors feature a semicircular arrangement of windows facing south, offering views of the forest and its surroundings, making this project a strong start to my architectural work.

ON2

Design and technology

ON2 was a design course with multiple small assignments focusing on building techniques and construction. The course concluded with an integrated project where all the aspects covered came together which is the next assignment.

We designed a small guesthouse with a restaurant at the base of the wind turbine behind the Smikkel-Inn on the Maasvlakte including space for 30 restaurant guests and 20 hotel guests. The design takes place along the beach the dikes the Nieuwe Waterweg and industrial surroundings.

My approach

I wanted to create a design that made the waves of the water visible while also emphasizing the height of the wind turbine. This led to the chosen form with vertical wooden slats. Technical drawings were part of the process to ensure the design could withstand the noise of the wind turbine. In addition, many technical drawings show the construction of the building itself and how it remains structurally stable.

ON3

The Commons

The ON4 module focuses on designing collective and affordable housing in the context of the evolving city of Amersfoort, specifically at the Oliemolenhof in De Nieuwe Stad. The course emphasizes social sustainability and creative responses to limited space and changing societal needs. Students first analyze the site, the urban context, and precedents, then individually develop a building concept that translates a personal position on collective living into spatial design. The assignment requires consideration of scale, light, circulation, materiality, and the integration of program units, resulting in a coherent architectural concept that responds to both the community and the environment.

My approach

The building brings together young and old residents through its layout and form. A main sightline runs from the southern ground floor to the northern top floor, connecting all key spaces via stairs and lifts. Central public areas include the entrance lounge, library, study spaces, kitchen, dining, living room, bar, and event hall, with a rooftop terrace and garden above. A circular void mirrors the plaza and enhances visual connection. Housing units are arranged to balance privacy and interaction: small studios for young people and slightly larger units for older residents, with shared cooking and dining areas. Each floor features small coffee bars for quiet seating and community interaction.
